J.P. (Joe) Hudson
President of Burnbrae Farms Limited
1943 Became involved in a poultry project in high school raising 50 leghorn hens.
1947 Started into the poultry business with 3,000 laying hens on litter.
1948 Graduated from high school and went to work with his father and brother on the family dairy farm.
1949 Bought first load of feed from Toronto Elevators.
1955 Built his first "wire floor" barn and by 1964 had 175,000 birds on "wire". For
the first few years, grading activities were carried out in a small area on the second floor of one of
the barns.
1959 Constructed a separate grading facility and the "partnership" was incorporated as Burnbrae
Farms Ltd.
1965 Commenced an egg breaking operation at Burnbrae Farms Ltd.
1967 Elected as Director of the Ontario Egg marketing Board and is now its longest serving Director.
1974 Started Ferme St-Zotique Ltee., which has since become the largest and most modern egg laying and
grading complex in Quebec.
1978 Expanded egg grading operations into Western Ontario with the acquisition of Maple Lynn Foods Ltd.
1981 Acquired the egg operations of Maple Leaf Egg Products Ltd. of Mississauga (now Bon-ee-Best Eggs).
1983 Acquired two existing Quebec egg breaking operations and consolidated them under the name of Les
Oeufs Bec-O Inc.
1995 Now operates 2 large in-line egg production facilities, 1 large pullet growing farm, 4 grading stations
which grade a considerable share of the eggs for the Canadian table market and 2 modern egg breaking and
further processing facilities. This represents one of Canada's largest integrated operations involved
in the production, marketing, and further processing of eggs, and provides employment for approximately
350 people.
