Feeding Tips:
Ensure newborn kids get at least 125 mls of colostrum within the first 12 hours of birth. Thereafter, feed 250 to 500 mls/day of appropriate colostrum for two to three days after birth. Kids may require assistance in adapting to artificial nipples for one to two days. Group feeding temperature should be 4oC to limit intake and prevent overeating. Feedings must be evenly spaced. If kids develop scours, maintain the amount of milk replacer solution fed, but reduce the concentration by 25 to 50% for one to two days depending on severity of scours. Provide electrolytes, if necessary.
Starting at one to two weeks of age, supply kids with free-choice water and palatable creep feed. Offer high quality forage free-choice starting at three to four weeks of age. Follow the recommendations of your feed consultant. It is suggested that kids be weaned at not less than 35 days of age or 10 to 12 kg of body weight or when they are consuming 0.15 kg of solid feed per day.
