Why Creep Feed?
A calf requires the proper levels of nutrition in order to reach its genetic potential. Research has shown that the nutrition requirements of the calf cannot be met by the cow’s milk alone, and while calves can consume grass, they are unable to ingest enough to meet their daily requirement for proper growth. The result is what is termed a “hungry calf gap”.
The best way to eliminate this nutrient deficiency is through the introduction of a high-quality protein supplement such as a creep feed. This type of ration will not only aid the calf in achieving optimum growth, the creep feed will also lessen the demand on the cow for milk. This results in the calf being able to reach it’s full genetic potential along with a better-conditioned cow.
A cow that is able to gain weight during the grazing season is able to channel more of her food intake into body condition as opposed to providing energy to the calf. In the end, the advantages of a high-performance calf creep feed are expressed in both a calf with improved weight gain and appearance and a cow with better conditioning, which enables her to breed back more readily.
Feed Excelerator Medicated Creep Ration to nursing calves at the rate of 1 kg per 100 kg of body weight until weaning to calves on pasture or consuming forage. Feed continuously for at least 28 days during periods of coccidiosis or when it is likely to be a hazard. Excelerator should be offered to calves at no later than 30 days of age.
- Use a sturdy, well-designed and well-protected creep feeder and place it in a convenient cow-calf loafing area.
- Start feeding Masterfeeds Excelerator Creep Feed before calves reach 30 days of age.
- Make certain the feed is fresh by filling the feeder with only enough feed to last 10 to 14 days.
- Keep the feed level up – never let the creep feeder go empty.
- Maintain proper herd health management.
Features & Benefits
Early easier weaning.
Calves learn to eat dry feed from the bunk earlier, reducing demand on the cow.
Calves display less stress at weaning and adjust to full feed faster when placed in the feedlot.
Higher weaning weight.
Calves are 34 to 45 kg (75 to 100 lbs) heavier at weaning weight when raised on a high quality creep feed.
Better overall appearance.
Calves look more muscled, and uniform when nutritional requirements are met.
Cow condition is improved.
Better cow condition score at breeding time.
Medicated to reduce the risk of coccidiosis and other disease risks.
Total Replacement Technology (TRT).
This mineral technology uses organic trace minerals to support mineral retention and build tissue reserves, helping calves transition from nursing through the weaning process. Using TRT encourages optimal overall health, immune status, and reproductive function in the animal
